I hope you are enjoying this holiday weekend. I have a few new things to share with you.
One is that we are beginning to use Class Dojo as our behavior management and reporting system. I will print a small report for you that will be in the weekly folders (Tuesday Folder). However, to really get full benefits of this you need an email address that you can share with me. You can get them free at gmail.com. If you have a smart phone or tablet/Ipad even better. You can see in real time how your student's day is going. There is also a messaging system for your to use like texting to reach me and I can reach you. Also, I can send out whole class messages about things like last Friday they could dress out because it was our independence day. IT was on the newsletter but I would like to be able to send you reminders. Anyway, I digress. It's a great tool and it has been very motivational. Students have MANY opportunities to earn points (greenies). I will look for those on task and following directions especially during our "Do It Now" time in the morning and during H.A.L.L. (Hands at your side, Always facing forward, Line Straight, Lips Sealed). Hallways are zone zero as to not disrupt other classes that are learning. It's very important. Transition times are a big time to earn a point as well. First, I give out positive to others they can hear the sound, usually most students will self-correct so they can earn the point. If after given the chance to self-correct they choose to continue the undesired behavior they will lose a point (red). Recess time will be rewarded (it is earned not a privilege) as long as you are at 0 or have green marks. For each red point, they will loose 5 minutes. We go out for about 15-20 minutes. I will send home instructions on how to sign up in the Tuesday folder. I sent emails to those I had emails addresses for already. Thank you for those parents who already signed up. This is a great motivator when the students know you are looking at their behavior. I also am able to send you photos of your child through the messenger! :)
I am still looking for a room parent. If you would be able to come assist on Field Trips and Class Parties and help organize help from other parents on events, etc. I would love to work with you this year on these things. Please let me know. I may approach some of you if I don't have a volunteer! It could be Co-parents if two are interested.
I am changing up the homework some. I have taken spelling off the homework activity board and it has it's own menu now. It's a tic-tac-toe menu and the students can pick 3 different activities each week. One that is important and on the homework activity board is the practice test from you on Wednesday. We take a practice test on Thursday in Class and if they pass they don't have to take it on Friday! :) They love this and are disappointed if they don't get it like their friends. So, please help them study and test them at home. The spelling words are so important because they represent our phonics patterns that are helping us to become fluent readers.
I also put days to complete homework on the board to keep the student motivated and doing the work. If they do not return homework on Fridays from this point forward they will miss recess. It is important practice and is not busy work. Please help your student complete their homework. It is suggested they have a designated spot to complete it and that it be done as soon as possible after they get home where the learning is fresh in their mind. My son always had to complete homework before playing just as a motivation for him to get it done. I don't think the activities will take more 15 minutes or so each night. If your child is struggling to complete it, please let me know.
We will begin a unit on plants. I hope we're able to plant our own in our room. Eventually they will be bringing them home in a cup with soil.
Reading the story each night is critical. They take a comprehension test on it every Friday. If they are not reading it they will not do well. Please help them with this nightly.
I am enjoying teaching your children and working with you. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you to Euriana's Mom for the donation of lined paper. :) I appreciate the support greatly.
